Potsdam, NY – Following a scoreless first half, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team and Vassar College combined for three goals in the final 40 minutes, but the Golden Knights came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision on Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record in conference evened at 2-2-1 while moving to 6-4-3 overall, while Vassar remained unbeaten in league play at 4-0-1 while improving to 8-2-3 overall. Clarkson will look to bounce back over the .500 mark when it faces Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

Vassar and Clarkson combined for just two shots on goal in the first half, but it didn't take long for the Brewers to break out of their offensive funk, tallying at the 52:22 mark. Savannah Cutler hit a cross through the slot from the left side, finding Amanda McFarland on the opposite end of the six. McFarland then chipped in a shot from up close to give the Brewers a 1-0 advantage.

In the 67th minute, Clarkson was able to knot things up at 1-1. Madison Kather sent a cross from the left side of the field near the top of the penalty box, with the pass initially getting tipped away. Eventually it found the foot of Megan Murphy and she hit a shot from the left arch near the top of the 18.

It appeared as if the game might head to overtime, but Vassar recorded the game-winning goal in the final 10 minutes of the game. Amanda McFarland found Ally Thayer up front and created a mini-breakaway with one Clarkson defender on her trail. Elyse Green was forced to come out to make a play, but Thayer was able to slide a soft groundball past the sophomore goalkeeper at the 83:18 mark.

Vassar finished with a 14-8 edge in shots and a 6-1 lead in corner kick opportunities. Green finished with six saves for the Knights, and Fiona Walsh made two stops for the Brewers.

Friday afternoon's game was also an opportunity for the Golden Knights' Women's Soccer program to raise awareness for pediatric cancer.

"We chose to get involved with Go 4 the Goal because it is a genuine organization working towards a great cause," head coach Kelsey Yam remarked. "We believe that hosting a Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer game will raise awareness for those patients and families battling pediatric cancer in our small town, in the soccer world, and in the larger community. Every bit of awareness and funding can make a push towards better outcomes, care, and funding for those battling with pediatric cancer. We are honored to be a part of the Go 4 the Goal's cause and hope that we can continue to be a part of their efforts in the future.
