Van Herwarde and Lowth lead charge for Clarkson's Alpine team at USCSA Eastern Regionals

Queensbury, NY - Sophomores Kara Van Herwarde and Hayes Lowth led an impressive charge for the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team on Saturday as the Golden Knights put together several solid runs in the slalom in the USCSA Eastern Regionals at West Mountain.

Van Herwarde, who won the final MacConnell Division race of the season at West Mountain two weeks ago, finished third in the slalom with a time of 1:49.87, placing in the top five in each of her runs on Saturday. Four other women's skiers place inside the top 25 among the 62 skiers that participated on Saturday. Taylor Manderson took 13th with a time of 1:53.69, coming in seventh during her second run of the day, while Casey Abraham placed 18th overall in 1:55.60 with two consistent runs. Freshman Libby McCusker had one of her best showings of the seaosn by taking 20th in 1:55.87, and Kelly Rowland took 23rd in 1:56.48.

The men were outstanding overall, with four skiers placing consecutively fifth through eighth. Hayes Lowth came in fifth overall in 1:44.74, taking eighth in his first run and fifth in his second run, while freshman Greg Murray was one spot lowe rin sixth in 1:45.86. Junior Sean Donohue continued his resurgence by coming in seventh in 1:45.87 and classmate Austin Florian was eighth overall with a time of 1:45.93 after nearly posting two top 10 finishes in both runs. Another junior, Ian Williams, closed out the Clarkson skiers in 1:49.96, coming in 21st among the 59 skiers.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow in the giant slalom looking to cement their spots for the USCSA Nationals to be held near Bend, Oregion the first week of March.
