Junior forward Brady Condlin recorded a career-high 32 points, and three other Saints recorded double figures, however the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team was edged by Utica, 82-81, in a season opening thriller at the Hilbert College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night. The Pioneers, who led 46-39 at the half, improve to 1-0 on the season and will appear in the championship game tomorrow at 3pm, while the Saints fall to 1-0 and will play either Alfred College or Hilbert in the consolation final at 1pm.
Tonight's game featured 12 lead changes, including four in the second half, and St. Lawrence tied the game on eight different occasions. St. Lawrence would battle back to take the lead with under 10:00 minutes to go, and first-year student Kieran Miller gave the Saints their largest lead of the half (71-64) on a jumper at with 7:57 to go for two of his six total points. The Pioneers, however, went on a 16-4 run over a span of 5:00 minutes to take an 80-75 with under 2:00 minutes remaining.
Condlin hit a three-pointer at the 1:30 mark to cut the deficit to 80-78, and after a wild series of turnovers and steals from both teams, the Saints missed an opportunity to tie the game on a shot at :29 and then opted to foul to stop the clock. Utica's Conor Maisch hit two free throws before Condlin hit another three-pointer to bring the Saints within one point. The Saints fouled again to put Maisch to the line, who missed the front end of a one-and one free throw, and Condlin collected to rebound to give the Saints one more chance to win with under two second left on the clock. The ensuing inbounds play was thrown away as the Pioneers escaped with the one point victory.
Condlin was 10-12 from the free throw line, 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and added seven rebounds, while senior forward Janpeter Brase added 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting and eight rebounds. First-year students Kyle Kobis and Kyle Edwards had impressive debuts with the Saints, recording 13 and 12 points, respectively, while combining for nine rebounds, nine assists, and five steals.
Utica shot 53.6% from the floor while St. Lawrence shot 40.3% on the day.
