POTSDAM -- With a big advantage in groundballs and an edge in shots, the Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team had its chances against Utica College on Saturday afternoon, but the visiting Pioneers were able to use a six-goal run midway through the non-league contest to pull out a 9-7 victory at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights held a 4-2 lead with 12:20 to play in the first half, but Utica (2-1), behind two goals from Tammy Kohanski and a tally by Kelley Fulerton, went into the break with a 5-4 advantage.

The Pioneers opened the second half with three more goals to go on top 8-4 with 14:44 remaining. The Knights outscored Utica 3-1 down the stretch, but it was not enough as the Green and Gold suffered their second straight loss.

Sophomore Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) led the Knights offensively with two goals and one assist. Classmates Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) and Kerrie Cline (Tuxedo, NY) also scored two goals apiece. Junior Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) added Clarkson’s other goal.

Kohanski led all scorers with five goals and two assists.

Clarkson outshot Utica 28-24 and controlled groundballs 20-12. Junior Hannah Walters (Amherst, NY) made nine saves for the Knights. Campbell picked up a game-high four groundballs.

At 1-2, Clarkson is back in action this Tuesday, March 29 when it plays at Oswego State at 4:00 p.m. in the final non-league game of the season.
