Potsdam, NY – In a game noted for its free throws, Union won the battle with 25 makes from the charity stripe as the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team dropped a 59-46 decision to the Dutchwomen Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped their sixth straight to fall to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen evened their mark overall and in conference games, moving to 7-7 and 3-3. Clarkson will face Rensselaer on Saturday, while Union will travel to St. Lawrence.

Plenty of turnovers and fouls “highlighted” the first half of Friday night’s game. Neither team could get into a rhythm offensively, as numerous touch fouls created little flow. Union shot just 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from the field, but was able to pick up points by making 13 of their 18 free throw attempts. Clarkson was even worse off, going 8-for-29 from the floor (27.6 percent), but the Knights were able to stay in the game with second chances, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds. Clarkson trailed early on, but came back to tie the score at 12-12 midway through the half. From that point on, neither team was able to gain much of an advantage, with five ties in the half and a two-point differential at the break.

Senior Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) led all scorers with eight points, adding in four rebounds. For Union, Kate Thompson had seven points, making five of her six free throw attempts.

Union stretched its modest advantage at halftime steadily in the second half, as Clarkson lost several players due to foul trouble. The fouls that were called in the first half continued in the second, giving the two teams a combined 48 violations. However, Union won the battle overall, making 25 of its 37 attempts from the free throw line, while Clarkson converted 14 of its 25 chances.

Turner finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting and 5-for-8 from the line while adding 12 rebounds. Freshman Brooke Butkovsky (Monroe, CT) added in eight points and four rebounds in just 12 minutes, but got into foul trouble quickly in each half before being disqualified with five.

Shayla Madden led Union with 13 points, making seven of her eight free throw attempts. Thompson and Brittney Kenney each finished with nine points.
