FREDONIA -- Senior swimmer Alexander Taylor (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) and junior Richie Zimmerman (Victor, N.Y./Victor) each set school records to headline the SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams’ efforts at the three-day Fredonia Invitational this weekend.
Taylor set the Bears’ record in the 200 breaststroke and Zimmerman in the 200 backstroke.
The men finished fourth with a score of 446, while the women were sixth with a score of 245.
The host Blue Devils won the women’s competition with 1,102 points and Penn State Behrend were the men’s champions with 890 points.
Sunday, Taylor cruised to a time of 2:06.12 in the 200 breaststroke to break is own school record by 0.49 seconds.
The time was also a Fredonia pool record and an NCAA B qualifying time.
Saturday, the senior set a pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 0:58.70.
Taylor also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.38, with Zimmerman finishing just two seconds behind him in second place. Zimmerman won the 200 backstroke with a Potsdam record and Fredonia pool mark time of 1:59.80.
The duo also swam two of the four legs for the Bears third place 200 medley relay team. Sophomore Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and freshman Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) swam the other two legs as they posted a time of 1:41.74.
Junior Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was the top finisher for the Bears’ women, placing sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.36.
Sophomore Victoria Blakeslee (Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville) also had a strong weekend with eighth place finishes in the 400 individual medley (5:06.24) and the 500 freestyle (5:41.35).
The invitational closes the 2012 portion of the swimming teams¹ schedule.
The Bears are back in action Saturday, Jan. 19, as St. Lawrence University comes to Maxcy Hall for a 1 p.m. showdown.
