Two records fall on Day 3 of SUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y.- Junior Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) defended his 100 butterfly title and set new school record. Sophomore Jennifer Yeager (Greene, N.Y./Greene) beat her own record in the 200 free in the preliminary round and did it again in the final heat.

Zapisek became a back-to-back SUNYAC Champion in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.59, beating his own previous record of 51.19 set last year in the SUNYAC Championships. Zapisek then teamed up with senior Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport), junior Chris Carlini (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and sophomore Ricky Blackburn (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) to finish fifth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.02.

In more individual action, Costa competed in the 100 backstroke and clocked in at 53.93 to place sixth in the final heat. Blackburn swam to a 12th place finish in the 200 free in 1:48.73 and sophomore Chris Halsey (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) competed in the 400 IM to finish 15th with a time of 4:43.79.

On the women's side, Yeager re-established her dominance in the 200 free by setting a new Potsdam record with a time of 1:58.67 in the preliminary round. She then turned around to beat it again in the final heat by touching the wall at 1:58.40 to finish fifth. Senior Victoria Blakeslee (Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville) recorded a time of 4:54.72 in the 400 IM to finish in 11th place and in the 1 meter dive, freshman Darien Frederick (Clayton, N.Y./Thousand Islands) scored a 269.90 to finish 14th.

In relay competition, the team of sophomore Kristin Canjura (Wilton, N.Y./Saratoga Springs), freshman Emily Gulitti (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Blakeslee and Yeager finished the 200 medley with a time of 1:57.25 and eighth place. In the 800 free, senior Kallee Frego (Massena, N.Y./Massena), sophomore Kira Wood (Hopewell, N.Y./John Jay), freshman Colleen Fraser (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Canjura teamed up to record a time of 8:55.55 to finish eighth.

The SUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude on Saturday with a morning session that begins at 10 a.m. and will be followed by an evening session that starts at 6 p.m.
