Canton, NY – Freshman Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season to get the women's ice hockey team within one but they ultimately fell 4-1 to visiting Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at the Roos House.

After much of the first period was scoreless Franklin Pierce broke through first at the 18:09 mark. Bryana Harron skated the puck towards the outside of the left circle and found Marisa Ketterman cross ice near the right post as she put home a one-timer. The Ravens headed to the locker room with the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Just less than two minutes into the second Franklin Pierce extended their lead. Ketterman fired a shot from the left circle that was initially saved by Roo goaltender Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON). The rebound fell directly to the feet of Harron to the right of net where she beat DiNardo over the glove as she moved to her left.

The Roos got within one at the 9:20 mark when Margret Troiano (Morristown, N) picked up the puck in the neutral zone and eluded a defender using a burst of strength. The freshman deked the goalie right to left and back to the right sliding a shot between the pipe and glove of Raven net minder Shannon O'Neil.

Shortly after the goal SUNY Canton had 48 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage but were unable to make the Ravens pay as they killed it off.

Sarah Sheils made a beautiful individual effort on the penalty kill to put Franklin Pierce up 3-1. She skated in with a defender converging on her, eluded her, and moved the puck towards DiNardo at the left crease. With a quick finesse move she carried the puck around to the opposite side of goal. From a nearly impossible angle the junior lifted a wrister top shelf just inside the left post. Franklin Pierce took a two-goal lead into the second intermission.

The Roos looked to get within a goal and Krjstin Hoberg (Grand Forks, ND) had a shot from the point that struck off the post. The Ravens would add an important insurance goal with just less than four minutes to play. Ketterman had an initial shot that was saved but Francesca Paciello converted the rebound for the 4-1 final.

The Roo penalty kill was perfect in the game killing off all seven Raven power plays, while SUNY Canton went 0-for-4 with the extra skater. DiNardo stopped 40 shots between the pipes for SUNY Canton, while O'Neil made 10 saves for Franklin Pierce.

The women's ice hockey team returns to the ice in the New Year when it will take on UMass Boston in the Cofish Bowl on January 2, 2015 at 1 p.m.
