CORTLAND, N.Y.—SUNY Cortland overpowered the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team 16-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Chugger Davis Stadium in the SUNYAC semifinals. Junior midfielder Derek Frost led the Bears with two goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Pat Bonafede notched two tallies. Massena native Zach Hopps led the Red Dragons with four goals and two assists for a game-high six points.

Bonafede opened the scoring at 12:19 of the first quarter with a bounce shot from the right side of the Red Dragons' goal. Cortland's Thomas Casey tied the score less than two minutes later, but Bears senior midfielder Pat Morrill answered with a man-up goal on a pass from Frost. The Red Dragon's scored the next two to gain their first lead of the contest. Potsdam created strong offensive pressure as the first quarter wound down, but couldn't get any closer, trailing 3-2 after 15 minutes.

Cortland ground down the Bears' defense early in the second quarter and took over the game. The Red Dragons scored all eight goals of the second quarter and extended their run to 10-0. Junior goalie Ryan Duffy replaced senior captain Stefan Sloma at the 4:10 mark. Cortland led 11-2 at the break.

The pace slowed down in the second half, but Potsdam couldn't crack the Red Dragon's defense. Cortland tacked on three more and led 14-2 after 45 minutes. Frost broke the drought at 12:21 of the final stanza for the Bears third goal. Bonafede made it two in a row for Potsdam on a pass from junior midfielder Jared Flath 1:42 later. After another Cortland goal, Frost struck again at 5:42 with a man-up marker on a pass from junior captain Rob Kunz. Mike Cummings answered with an extra-man goal at 4:31 to cap the scoring at 16-5.

In goal, Sloma stopped four shots and allowed 10 goals in the first 25:50. Duffy made six saves and allowed five goals in the next 26:06. Senior Ryan Doyle allowed a goal in 5:04 and freshman Jack Corcoran stopped one shot in the final 3:00. Red Dragon goalie Mike Kaminski earned the victory with five saves in just two goals allowed in 34:30.

Cortland topped the Bears in shots (49-33), ground balls (36-25) and faceoffs (16-8).

The Bears close the season at 6-8, while the Red Dragons (16-0) remain undefeated advance to host second-seeded Plattsburgh in the championship on Saturday.
