In the opening ECAC Hockey game, the eighth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team blanked Harvard 4-0 on Friday afternoon in Cheel Arena.

Clarkson improves to 5-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference while Harvard's mark is 1-1-0 for both conference and overall records.

"I thought today may have been our most complete game we have played this season," said Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "Our players did a great job sticking to the game plan and focusing on the things we have been working on all week in practice. You can see our team is becoming more confident and comfortable with each other and our system. Today was a great game for us to take the positives from and build on heading into tomorrow's game against Dartmouth."

Neither team was able to break the deadlock in the first period, but in the middle frame, Clarkson co-captain Cayley Mercer took over. She opened the scoring 2:49 into the period. Loren Gabel wrapped around the net and was able to slide a pass to Mercer in the slot and Mercer was able to tap the puck home. Mercer added a second with 14 seconds left in the second with Gabel again setting up the goal. This time it was Mercer working from behind the net, however she was able to score after shooting from the right side. Michael Pejzlova had assists on both goals.

In the third period, Clarkson continued to pour in goals. At 10:03, the Golden Knights scored a power-play goal. Ella Shelton lined up a shot from the blue-line and Rhyen McGill was able to tip the puck past Harvard's goaltender. Clarkson added a fourth goal at 14:35 when Lauren Lefler's shot rebounded to Jessica Gillham right in front of the Hrvard goal. Gillham was able to slot home to finish the scoring.

Clarkson finished with a 37-20 shot advantage. The Golden Knights went 1-5 on the power-play while killing both Harvard extra man opportunities. Shea Tiley made 20 saves for her first shutout of the season. Molly Tissenbaum had 33 stops in her first start of the year.

Clarkson will continue the weekend with a 3:00 pm game against Dartmouth tomorrow in Cheel Arena.
