A four-run fifth inning for RIT helped the Tigers snap the Saints seven-game win streak and hand the Scarlet and Brown its first conference loss, 6-1, on Sunday night at the University of Rochester. The Saints are now 8-2 on the season and 4-1 against Liberty League opponents, while RIT improves to 7-3 and 1-0 in conference matchups.
RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but sophomore Devin Robson tied the game with a solo homerun – his first of the season – in the top of the fourth inning.
The Tigers used six consecutive base hits and one passed ball to four across in the bottom of the fifth and chase the Saints starting pitcher Sam Downes out of the game, as he was relieved by graduate student Ben Jenkins.
Downes went four and one-third innings, allowed nine hits and four earned runs and struck out one batter. Jenkins gave up four hits and one run (unearned) while striking out four in three and two-thirds innings of work.
RIT added its final run in the sixth and relief pitcher Brandon Cohall struck out six in the final three innings for the Tigers.
The game was the first of a three-game set between the Saints and Tigers as the teams will meet again for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
