St. Lawrence University's women's crew teams began their spring seasons in impressive style at the Rochester Sprints hosted by RIT on Saturday with wins by three boats and second place finishes by two others.
The Saint varsity 8+ rowed 7:05.06 to beat Mercyhurst by over four seconds with Rochester and RIT trailing. Members of the winning crew were Heidi Weiss, Jenette Kloss, Britton Weber, Emily Hutchinson, Maggie Fellows, Sally Dankner, Jessica Burdett, Maddy Fones and Kelly Greenwood.
In the women's JV-8 race, the Saints beat second place Mercyhurst by nearly 13 seconds, rowing 7:26.69 with a team of Kelly Bartlett, Daniela Stokes, Eleanor Jones, Abigail McIvor, Hannah Durant, Cadence Trapini, Alissa McCaffrey, Karen Blakelock and Amy Yao. The Novice-4 of Rose Dowley, Gabrielle Schreffler, Grace Conrad, Jennifer Longwell and Yukiko McQueeny was the other victorious crew for the Saints, rowing 7:56.28 with RIT second in a tight race, just under two seconds back.
The Saint novice-8, which included Dowley, Conrad, Trapini, Ann West, Schreffler, Eleanor Jones, Hannah Durant, Blakelock and McQueeny was second in 7:22.34 to Mercyhurst which rowed 7:17.51 and the Saint V4B team of Weiss, Kloss, Burdett, Fones and Greenwood was second in 7:46.79 to Rochester, which won in 7:43.66.
The Saints, who began the spring season ranked ninth nationally, will compete at Ithaca on April 13.
