New York, NY - A team missing its first 15 shots from the field and four more from the free throw line normally isn’t the greatest winning formula, but the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team was able to recover from a horrific start in Saturday evening’s game to take a 68-65 victory over St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn in the consolation game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament.

The Golden Knights evened their early season mark at 1-1 and will be off for the next eight days, next taking on SUNY Canton on Sunday, November 27th.

Clarkson went without a point for the first nine minutes of Saturday’s game, finding itself in a 16-0 hole before Ashley Jones converted a lay up to pop the lid on the basket. The Knights’ run was tough to swallow, with 15 missed shots, four missed free throws, and four turnovers, but once the team got that out of its system, Clarkson was able to crawl back into the contest. For the remainder of the half, the Knights shot 10-for-23, and their rebounding advantage was considerable, edging Brooklyn 32-22 in the first half, including 16 boards on the offensive end.

Trailing by 11 at the half, Clarkson was down by 12 just a few minutes into the second period, but rattled off a 17-3 run that was capped off by senior Carey Turner’s (Clifton Park, NY) jumper which gave the Knights their first lead of the ballgame at 46-44 with 10:56 remaining. Though Brooklyn would tie the game a few seconds later, Clarkson went on another 8-0 run over the next few moments. Brooklyn would make the game interesting down the stretch with some improbable 3-pointers to cut into the Clarkson lead, but the Knights would hold off the run to take the game by three points.

Three players recorded double-doubles for the Knights, led by Noelle Miller (Hamburg, NY), who produced 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists in the contest. Carey Turner added 13 points and 14 rebounds, and freshman Taliah Pounds (Watervliet, NY) came through with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, NY) also tossed in 12 points and seven boards.

Brooklyn’s Joanna Marciniec led all scorers with 19 points, shooting 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc before fouling out. Ashley McQuillan added 15 points and Teresa Mangan scored 13 for Brooklyn.
