POTSDAM, N.Y.—Three SUNY Potsdam athletes have been named SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award winners for the 2012-13 season. Sophomore Carlene Benson, a member of the equestrian team, senior hockey player Katie Komsa, and sophomore lacrosse player Bailey Weigel were among the 25 conference athletes to receive the honor.

For a SUNYAC student-athlete to be eligible, he or she must be a member of the first or second All-Conference or All-Tournament Team with a minimum GPA of 3.3 for at least three semesters. A student-athlete can only win the award once per sport.

In her second season of competition, Benson routinely posted top-three finishes for the Bears. She won the beginner walk trot canter competition at St. Lawrence University on Nov. 18.

Komsa finished her career as a Bear this season after playing in 96 games, scoring 10 goals and adding 21 assists for a total of 31 points. This year she served as a team captain and saw time in 25 games. She tied her single season best for assists with six.

Weigel, who earned the award for women's lacrosse despite also playing for Potsdam's women's basketball team, made an impressive collegiate lacrosse debut this season. The attacker led the Bears in scoring with 22 goals and 11 assists for 33 points. She led the SUNYAC and was 14th in the nation with a Potsdam single-season record 96 draw controls, placing her fifth on the school's all-time list after just one season. Weigel set the program single-game draw control mark with 12 against the University of Southern Maine in Florida on March 26. She scored a career-high four goals against Morrisville on March 30 and Canton on April 7. Weigel recorded a personal-best seven points against the Roos on the same day.
