Thompson, Statesmen pull Aaway from Saints, 65-57

The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team battled Hobart in a back-and-forth first half and held a 50-48 lead with 7:25 remaining in regulation. However, the Statesmen (8-5, 4-0) used a 17-7 run sparked by Stefan Thompson to close the game and win the Liberty League contest, 65-57, in the Burkman Gymnasium on Friday. Meanwhile, the Saints were led by three in double figures in the loss and fell to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in league.

Sophomore Brady Condlin had a team-high 14 points and four rebounds, while junior Janpeter Brase recorded 12 points and five rebounds. Junior Al Jones added 10 points, while classmate Payton Stahler chipped in eight points and five assists. Thompson finished with a game-high 20 points for the Statesmen.

It was a highly contested game that was tied on twelve different occasions with six lead changes. Thompson made a pair of free throws at 5:26 that proved to be the finally tie-breaker, 52-50. The Statesmen turned a two point lead into an 11 point lead over the next 3:00 minutes with the help of clutch shooting and St. Lawrence turnovers. The Saints outscored the Statesmen 6-3 in the final minute but it was not enough as Hobart closed out the game with the 65-57 win.

Both teams shot 50.0% from the floor during the game. Hobart held a 26-23 advantage in rebounds and forced 10 St. Lawrence turnovers, while limiting its own to six.

St. Lawrence will look to rebound from tonight's loss against RIT tomorrow, January 19th. Tip-off against the Tigers is at 4:00pm in the Burkman Gymnasium.
