Monaca, PA – Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, NY) had a huge game recording 22 points and 16 rebounds as the women's basketball team overcame a 15-point first half deficit to defeat host Penn State Beaver, 71-69, Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Penn State Beaver Tip-Off. The win improves the Kangaroos to 1-1, while the loss drops the Beavers to 0-2.
Terrance had a productive day shooting 10-for-18 from the field and hauling in a game-high 16 boards playing all 40 minutes. For her efforts during the two games this weekend she was named to the All-Tournament team.
Brianna Sayer (Hermon, NY) tallied 13 points and five rebounds and Breanna Vatter (Brasher Falls, NY) finished with 11 points. Brittany Rotach (Brasher Falls, NY) had eight points, while Joelle Percy (Black River, NY) picked up six points and seven rebounds.
Rotach opened the game with a made jumper but that would be the Roos only lead in the opening half as Penn State would lead by as many as 15 points after five and a half minutes of action. The Beavers took a 39-32 lead into halftime.
Penn State led by nine points at 51-42 with 14:06 remaining. SUNY Canton used a 10-0 run that included five points each from Terrance and Vatter to take a 52-51 lead. The Roos took the lead for good with 3:56 remaining after another basket from Terrance.
An Alicia Uhlein (Watertown, NY) trey and Percy free throw put SUNY Canton up 67-62 with 2:17 to play. The Beavers would get within two with seven seconds remaining and had a chance to tie just before the buzzer but the Roos held on for the 71-69 win.
SUNY Canton shot 40 percent from the field compared to the Beavers hitting just 29 percent of their shots. The Roos committed 27 turnovers, while Penn State gave up the ball 18 times. SUNY Canton got to the free throw line 35 times on the day.
The women's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to take on SUNY Potsdam beginning at 6:00 p.m.
