The St. Lawrence women's soccer team had its first tournament appearance since 1989 cut short with a first-round loss to The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. TCNJ tallied a pair of goals in each half en route to a 4-1 win over the Saints.

With the loss, St. Lawrence finishes the season at 13-5-2. The Lions improve to 13-3-4 and advance to play host Williams in the second round on Sunday afternoon.

"While we did not get the result we were aiming for, it was not due to a lack of effort," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "TCNJ came prepared and with years of tournament experience, they made it challenging for us to play our game."

The Lions opened up a 2-0 lead in the first 29 minutes, including a goal at the 3:32 mark but sophomore Hannah Merriam was able to cut that deficit in half with her second of the season in the 30th minute.

Just 1:14 after TCNJ recorded its second of the game, the Elmore, Vt. native took a through ball from senior Samantha Rock and went one-on-one with Lions' keeper Jessica Weeder for the finish.

TCNJ came out of the half with a 2-1 lead and then added goals in the 46th and 66th minute to push to the eventual 4-1 margin.

Senior goalkeeper Kelsey West finished with five saves in her final came for the Saints, as TCNJ held a 18-4 advantage in shots and 9-2 edge in shots on goal.

"Today was a tough loss, not so much the results but the last opportunity to coach such an incredible group of seniors," Bari added. "They were a big part of why we were in the tournament and have given so much to the program."

West is one of 10 seniors for the Saints, as she and Emily DePoy, Amanda Hamilton, Hannah Calvelli, Adriana Morra, Emma Fleming, Katelyn Daley and Rock have been integral parts of the Saints success of the past four seasons, helping the team to their first two conference championships matches in program history and this year's NCAA Tournament.

"I'm proud of this team," Bari said. "It was a great season and we have now set a new standard for the future of Saints women's soccer."
