(Canton, N.Y.)- Freshman goalie Victoria Taylor (Hokah, Minn.) posted 46 saves in SUNY Canton’s 6-1 loss to Stevenson University in a women’s ice hockey game Sunday afternoon at Roos House in Canton.
Taylor was outstanding in her seventh start of her rookie campaign, especially in the first period when she stopped 20 of 22 shots, keeping the contest a one-goal affair with the visitor’s on top 2-1 after 20 minutes. Taylor had 12 saves in the second period and 14 more in the third, allowing two goals in each of the final two periods.
SUNY Canton jumped out to a 1-0 lead after junior defenseman Caty Darling (Oswego, N.Y.) netted her first career goal unassisted and on the power play at the 6:57 mark of the opening stanza. The Mustangs tied the game less than a minute later and added their second goal with 1:14 left in the period.
The Roos had two power play opportunities in the second period and produced several outstanding scoring chances, but were unable get the puck past Mustangs’ goalie Sarah Modzelewski, who finished with 18 saves. For the game, the Roos finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
Molly O’Neil tallied two goals to lead Stevenson, and Karly Vis added three assists.
The Roos are back in action next weekend when they compete in the University of Vermont Catamount Challenge. SUNY Canton will face the University of Buffalo on Friday, Jan. 25 at 1:15 p.m., the University of Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 10 p.m., and the host Catamounts on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 3:30 p.m.
