Caitlyn Syphurs hit a two-out grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to cap a six-run rally in an 8-2 win in game one, and the St. Lawrence University softball team slugged out 17 hits in a 13-0 win in game two to sweep Union College in a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Schenectady.

With the wins, the Saints improved on their record-breaking start, moving to 12-2 overall, 2-0 in Liberty League play. The previous best record through 14 games in St. Lawrence history was an 11-3 mark, set in the program's first season in 2000.

"It's been hard to not be able to play after our spring trip and to jump right into conference games," said head coach Elisa Van Kirk. "All 16 players were prepared and ready to go. It was a total team effort today."

Union forced extra innings in the first game of the afternoon when Courtney Casey's RBI single in the bottom in the seventh inning tied the game, 2-2, but the Saints responded immediately with six runs in the top of the eighth. Angelina Carney and Allie Courtwright both worked walks, and Taylor Armijo hit a single to load the bases.

Deanna Sullivan gave the Saints a 3-2 lead with an RBI single, and Elle Gray increased the lead to two runs with a bases loaded walk. Syphurs capped the scoring with her third home run of the season, a bomb to center field, to push the lead to six.

Syphurs also hit two doubles to go 3-for-5 with five RBI in the first game, while Armijo was 2-for-5 and stole home to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Madison Mitchell improved to 8-0 in the circle with her seventh complete game of the season. She allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Casey was 2-for-4 for the Dutchwomen in the first game.

The Saints' offense kept rolling, scoring five runs on seven hits in the first inning of the second game. St. Lawrence scored its other eight runs in the fourth inning, including seven with two outs.

Carney went 4-for-4 with three RBI in the second game, and Gray was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Syphurs was 2-for-3 with an RBI double to finish the day 5-for-8 with six RBI. Armijo was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base, while Emma Reakes was 2-for-4.

Allie Courtwright threw a complete game shutout for the Saints, allowing five hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Kara Brown was 2-for-2 from the leadoff spot to lead the Dutchwomen, who fell to 2-10, 0-2.

The Saints will face RPI in another Liberty League doubleheader on Sunday in Troy.
