Utica, NY - It isn't often a late spurt of offense can decide a soccer game, but SUNYIT scored a pair of goals in the final five minutes to defeat the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 2-1 Wednesday night.
The Golden Knights fell to 0-4-1 overall while SUNYIT improved to 3-2. Clarkson will take the weekend off to regroup and will be back in action next weekend when the team travels to Plattsburgh.
Clarkson controlled play in the first half and was able to get on the scoreboard very late in the second half. Sophomore Alex Vozzella (Boston, MA) scored an unassisted goal at the 42:45 mark to give the Knights a 1-0 lead going into intermission.
The Knights appeared ready to come home with a victory, but the Wildcats found their scoring touch late in the game, tying the score 1-1 in the 86th minute and taking the lead just 52 seconds later in the 87th minute to snatch the win away from Clarkson.
SUNYIT finished with an 18-6 lead in shots and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) made seven saves in goal for Clarkson, while Malick Faye made one stop for the Wildcats.
