WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Babson College defeated the SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team 5-0 in the first round of the Wellesley Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Babson (1-2-1) was able to apply great pressure on the Bears defense right out of the gate. Ashley Tourso got the Beavers on the board at 12:59, burying a cross from Mika Cucullo.

Potsdam’s defense recovered and slowed the attack, despite territorial control by Babson.

However, the Beavers stuck twice in the final five minutes to take a 3-0 lead into the half.

Jenny Moore scored off a loose ball in front of the goal created by a free kick at 39:48. With just 35 seconds remaining in the half, Avika Shah received a pass from Moore and roofed it for the Beavers third goal.

In the 69th minute, Amy Festa finished a cross from Tourso for a 4-0 advantage. With just over four minutes remaining, Rachael Kantor capped the scoring with a marker off a loose ball in the box.

In goal, freshman Jaime Durant (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) finished the day with 10 saves. Babson keeper Melina Kapotsis turned aside the only chance she faced.

“We were missing a few key players this afternoon,” said Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak. “But our best players didn’t have their best game today. Babson is very good, but that’s the plan. We want to play good teams early in the season to prepare us for the rigors of conference play.”

Potsdam (2-1) faces another challenge as they take on Wellesley College today at 1 p.m.
