CORTLAND -- Four different Bears scored as the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (4-6, 3-5 SUNYAC) ended a four-game skid with a 4-3 victory over SUNY Cortland (2-7-2, 2-5-1) on Saturday night.

Freshman goalie Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) made 40 saves to earn his third career win and sophomore forward Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution) notched the game-winner for Potsdam.

After the Bears killed off three consecutive power plays early in the first period, freshman forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) forced a turnover and scored from the left side of the net at the 12:22 mark.

The teams traded chances for the rest of the period, but Potsdam held the 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

Nearly four minutes into the second period, Nick Zappia tied the score by burying a rebound. Just 1:07 later, junior forward Zach Blake (Campbellford, Ontario/Plattsburgh State) notched his second goal as a Bear with a one-timer to put Potsdam back in front 2-1. Simon and freshman forward Todd Thomas (Davidsville, Pa./Hartford Wolfpack) each recorded assists.

Forty-six seconds later Mike Lysyj answered for Cortland with a wrist shot from the left circle to tie the score again.

At the 12:56 mark, sophomore forward Trevor Cope (Swartz Creek, Mich./Atlanta, Jr. Knights) made it 3-2 with a power-play marker on assists from junior assistant captain Adam Place (Scarborough, Ontario/Bowmanville Eagles) and senior captain Matt Viola (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Vipers).

With 30 seconds to go in the period, Cortland tied it again with a goal from Chris Kaleta off a rebound. Keiser finished the second period with 19 saves and the teams headed into the locker room tied at 3-3.

Just 1:19 into the final stanza, Simon hammered home a rebound for the eventual game-winner. Thomas and senior captain Brett Waters (Uxbridge, Ontario/Markham Waxers) each assisted on the play.

Keiser stopped nine more shots before leaving with an injury with just 2:46 left. Junior goalie Shane Talarico came in to relieve Keiser and stopped the only two chances he faced.

The Red Dragons pulled goalie Lyle Rocker with 50 seconds left, but couldn’t solve Talarico. Rocker finished with 22 saves in the losing effort. Cortland outshot Potsdam 45-26.

The Bears were 1-8 on the man advantage and the Red Dragons were 0-5.

Potsdam is back in action next weekend as they head to Portland, Maine to take on Southern Maine.

The Bears face the Huskies at 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
