SUNY Potsdam Bears swim teams split season opener

POTSDAM -- The SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams split in their season opener versus Skidmore College.

The Bears men downed the Thoroughbreds 163-131, while the women fell, 185-104. T

hree Bears led the men’s team on the day. Junior Richie Zimmerman (Victor, N.Y. / Victor) won the 200 free (1:52.89), 200 breaststroke (2:00.35), 200 IM (2:05.15) and was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:43.67).

Freshman Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) capture the victories in the 50 free (22.95), 100 butterfly (55.69) and was on the 200 medley relay team. Senior Alexander Taylor (Port Ewen, N.Y. / Kingston) added wins in the 1000 free (10:42.41), 500 free (5:02.23), and 100 free (50.04).

Freshman Chris Carlini (Endwell, N.Y. / Maine-Endwell), junior Jeremy Rose (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford), senior Marcus Domfort (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia) and sophomore Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y. / Spencerport) each contributed in their respective events.

Junior Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) paced the women with wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.43), 200 breaststroke (2:44.26) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay (2:00.26) with teammates senior Paige Montroy (Cape Vincent, N.Y. / Thousand Islands), senior Liz Ringer (Queensbury, N.Y. / Queensbury), and freshman Jackie Cunningham (Voorheesville, N.Y. / Voorheesville).

Senior Kylie Barr (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) finished a close second in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.84) and the 200 breaststroke (2:45.26) to teammate, Binzer.

The Bears return to the pool Saturday, Nov. 3 for their dual meet against Norwich University at 1 p.m.
