POTSDAM – For the second consecutive day, the SUNY Potsdam volleyball team split two matches at the Victory Promotions Invitational at Welsh Gymnasium.

After winning their opener against Hamilton 25-21, 25-23, 25-13, the Bears (3-5) started their second match well but lost to Buffalo St. 25-27, 27-25, 25-20, 25-14.

Following play, Potsdam senior Erica Romaniello (Selden, N.Y.) was named to the All-Tournament team, the second all-tournament honor for the Bears’ libero this season.

Against Hamilton (4-1), the Bears won a pair of closely contested sets before running away in the third with a nine-point run at 6-6.

In the second set, Potsdam fell behind 15-9 before riding a wave of momentum and the serve of sophomore Jill Dye (Middletown, N.Y.) to take a 19-18 advantage. Down 23-22, the Bears won three consecutive points, capped by junior Sam Strader’s kill, to take the frame.

Junior Allison Metot (Bernhards Bay, N.Y.) led the way offensively with 11 kills. Strader (Watertown, N.Y.) collected five kills and six digs, while freshman Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) posted 20 assists and nine digs.

Romaniello paced the defense with 12 digs.

After Potsdam and Buffalo St. (5-4) split a pair of tight sets, the Bengals surged to a 19-10 advantage in the third set and took another commanding lead, 19-9, in the fourth.

Freshman Annie Smith (Burke, N.Y.) tallied a team-high nine kills and 12 digs. Romaniello registered 19 digs, and Blujus recorded 17 assists and nine digs.

On Friday, Potsdam defeated Morrisville in three sets after falling against cross-town rival Clarkson.

The Bears return to action Tuesday at home against St. Lawrence. The non-conference showdown is set to begin at 7 p.m.
