SUNY Geneseo defeats Potsdam Bears women's basketball team, 58-36

GENESEO -- SUNY Geneseo (16-0, 9-0 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-12, 1-8 SUNYAC) Friday night 58-36 in Schrader Gymnasium.

Senior guard Abbey LaPage (North Bangor, N.Y./Franklin Academy) led the Bears by going 3-for-5 from the floor with three 3-pointers. McKenna Brooks topped the Blue Knights with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Play was tight in the first quarter with Geneseo holding the slight 19-14 advantage. Senior captain Patti Dorgler (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and LaPage each drained two 3-pointers for the Bears and Kara Houppert also added six points for the Blue Knights.

The second quarter was a different story. Geneseo scored 16 points and their defense held Potsdam to five, combined from freshman guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and freshman forward Kim Pike (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun). The Blue Knights went 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Katie Durand and Brooks finished with five point each in the 10-minute quarter.

After halftime, Geneseo attacked Potsdam again on the defensive side of the ball. Keeping the Bears to six with threes from Dufrane and LaPage. Kayleigh Cavanaugh put up five points of Geneseo's 15 during the quarter, while Bridgit Ryan added four points.

Potsdam's offense opened up in the fourth. The Bears went on a 11-5 mini run that lasted over the first six minutes of the quarter. Sophomore guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) ignited the run with a layup and senior guard Sidney Thompson (Akwesasne, N.Y./Massena) closed it with a three-point play, but it wasn't enough and Geneseo walked away with the 58-36 win.

Dorgler finished with eight points and five rebounds and Dufrane tacked on six. Junior forward Emily Drake led the Bears with six boards and added four points.

Houppert and Durand each finished with nine points and Houppert grabbed five rebounds, while Durand had four steals and four assists.

Geneseo topped Potsdam 45-35 in rebounds, while the Bears shot 35-percent from behind the arch to the Blue Knights 25.

Potsdam will take on the Golden Eagles tomorrow at 4 p.m.
