Canton, NY – Mouhammed Thiam made three saves to record his third shutout of the season as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team earned a 0-0 double overtime tie in a non-conference contest v. Utica College on Wednesday evening.

The Roos (1-2-2) had a quality chance with six minutes left in the second half as Kevin Velasquez collected his own corner, dribbled through the center of the field and ripped a shot towards the left post that was saved by Utica keeper. SUNY Canton held a 5-1 shots on goal in the opening half but the teams went into intermission with a scoreless tie.

With 19 minutes remaining in regulation a Roos player received his second yellow card and was sent off as the team continued to play strong defense and look to counter. Neither team could find the back of the net in regulation as they played to extra time.

Thomas Muller had a Utica (2-3-1) header just under three minutes into the first overtime but Thiam made the save just under the cross bar.

Canton had a golden chance just less than five minutes into the second overtime when Edward Malinoski, Jr. made a beautiful individual effort to get by two defenders and then played a cut back pass to Kyle Smith on his left. Smith didn't get all of his shot aimed at the left post as Jonathan Side made the save.

Muller had another shot a minute later that took a between hop but Thiam kept the game scoreless with five minutes to play. Malinoski blasted a shot from way out with less than two to play but Side made the stop.

Thiam turned aside three shots for the Roos, while Side made 10 stops for the Pioneers.

The men's soccer team returns to the pitch on Saturday when it opens North Atlantic Conference play hosting Husson University at 1:30 p.m.
