SUNY Canton women's volleyball team ends 28-5 season with 3-1 loss at USCAA national championships

CANTON -- The SUNY Canton women’s volleyball team saw their tremendous season come to a close on Sunday as they lost to Rochester College 3-1 in the third-place game of the 2012 USCAA national championship in Roos House.

The Roos end the season with a 28-5 overall record and were 13-3 in games on their home court.

SUNY Canton closed the regular season with 17 straight wins to capture the third seed in the USCAA national championship. They went 3-1 in the pool play Friday and Saturday and then bested Penn State Fayette in three games in the elimination round to advance to Sunday’s competition.

The Roos lost in the semifinals 3-0 to Florida College and then forced Sunday’s afternoon match to go to four games with a tremendous third set win after falling behind 2-0.

Freshman Morgan Bills (Walworth, N.Y.), who was chosen for the all-tournament team, delivered a team-high 10 kills to lead the Roos.

Sophomore Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) finished with seven kills and two aces. Senior Danielle Swanston (Burke, N.Y.) added eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, N.Y.) contributed 25 assists, six kills and three digs. Freshman Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) had 10 digs. Sophomore Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, N.Y.) collected five kills and two digs and senior Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) added three kills.

In the earlier match against Florida College, Bills paced the Roos with seven kills. Swanston finished with five kills and three digs. Mynter had 16 assists and three digs. Grimshaw added four digs.

Carroll collected 16 digs and senior Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) added two kills.
