CANTON -- Sophomore goalie Laura Pratt (Binghamton, N.Y.) made a career-high 10 saves for the SUNY Canton women’s soccer in their 3-2 loss to D’Youville College on Sunday in Canton.
Pratt made six saves in the first half including a couple of terrific stops to keep the game close. One of those came with 3:30 left in the half when a D’Youville player got behind the Roos’ defense and fired a low shot headed towards the corner of the net. Pratt dove to her right and made a terrific save to keep it a one-goal game.
The Roos (1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when freshman Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y.) fired a shot on goal that was bobbled by the Spartans goalie. Junior Jade Sayward (Willsboro, N.Y.) pounced on the rebound and tapped the ball in the net for a one-goal lead.
D’Youville struck twice late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
With 24 minutes left in the second half the Roos tied the game on a similar play as their first goal. Junior Melissa Campoverde (Forest Hills, N.Y.) launched a shot at the net and Spartans goalie Christina Ventresca collided with one of her defenders leaving the ball all alone in front of the net for senior Chelsea Allen (Marcellus, N.Y.) to knock in the goal deadlocking the game at two apiece.
The Spartans tallied the game-winning goal with less than nine minutes left in regulation.
The Roos hit the road for their next two games next weekend when they play at SUNY Maritime on Sept. 8 and The King’s College on Sept. 9.
