CANTON -- The SUNY Canton women’s soccer team scored their first goal of the season just 1:19 into the opening half and never looked back as they rolled over Morrisville State College 6-0 in the first round of the Canton Tournament on Saturday.

"It was a great first game for us," said fourth-year head coach Kate Thomas-Moody. "I thought we came out strong and built momentum from there. We are a mix of youth and experience on the team so I'm pleased to have them gelling so well this early in the season, which is evident from the goals we scored and who was involved."

The Roos (1-0) dominated the game from the opening whistle keeping the ball in the offensive end for most of the 90 minutes. SUNY Canton outshot the Mustangs 19-2 and sophomore Laura Pratt (Binghamton, N.Y.) and freshman Megan Evans (Potsdam, N.Y.) combined for two saves in the shutout victory.

SUNY Canton took control 79 seconds into Saturday’s contest when freshman Jade Sayward (Willsboro, N.Y.) made a charge down the right wing and sent a terrific pass to freshman Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y.) streaking down the middle who then one-time the ball past Mustangs goalie Jennifer Zidzik. Those two combined for the Roos second goal in the 26th minute as Sayward fed Cree to the right side and Cree sent a nice shot into the goal. With 13 seconds left in the half junior Melissa Campoverde (Forest Hills, N.Y.) put a shot on goal from the left side that deflected off Zidzik’s hands and right to senior Kirsten Skelly (Morristown, N.Y.) who knocked in the rebound to give the Roos a 3-0 lead at the break.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Roos continued to make one solid offense charge after the next. Just over two minutes into the final 45 minutes, Sayward sent in a nice corner kick that Campoverde re-directed into the net putting the Roos on top 4-0. Junior Katlyn Hart (Harrisville, N.Y.) scored in the 67th minute from freshman Rebecca Remington (Potsdam, N.Y.) and senior Chelsea Allen (Marcellus, N.Y.) completed the scoring with 3:04 on the clock with Campoverde assisting.

Zidzik finished with seven saves for Morrisville who fell to 0-1.

"We will have a tough game tomorrow against D'Youville," Thomas-Moody added. "I hope that we can build upon today, continue working hard, and push ourselves to a new level to set a great tone for the rest of the season."

The Roos take on D’Youville College on Sunday at 2 p.m. while Morrisville faces Bay Path College at noon. D’Youville beat Bay Path 7-0 in the other first-round game.
