CANTON -- The SUNY Canton women’s soccer team is set to start their 2012 season and will do so at home this weekend hosting a two-day tournament.
The Roos play their first game of the year on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Morrisville State College at 2 p.m. on their home turf field. Bay Path College faces D’Youville in the other first-round game. On Sunday, the Roos take on D’Youville at 2 p.m. after Bay Path and Morrisville play at noon.
The Roos and fourth-year head coach Kate Thomas-Moody welcome back seven returning players including three of their top eight scorer’s from last season. Back to lead the Roos this fall are seniors Chelsea Allen (Marcellus, N.Y.), Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) and Kirsten Skelly (Brier Hill, N.Y.).
Sedlacek and Allen rotated between midfield and defense and Sedlacek had three goals for six points and Allen added one goal and three assists for five points. Skelly, a midfielder was limited to just three games after suffering an early-season leg injury.
Also returning are junior midfielders Melissa Campoverde (Forest Hills, N.Y.) and Katlyn Hart (Harrisville, N.Y.), sophomore goalie Laura Pratt (Binghamton, N.Y.) and sophomore defender Julia Gilbert (Phoenix, N.Y.).
Campoverde was the team’s second-leading scorer last year with four goals and one assist for nine points. Hart played in 17 games and had nine shots. Pratt played in six games and recorded 2.02 goals-against average and a .727 save percentage and Gilbert played in eight games and was part of a defense that held opponents to just under two goals per game.
Other players looking to crack the lineup for the Roos include freshmen midfielders/forwards Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, N.Y.), Franchesca Trombley (Dekalb Junction, N.Y.), Jade Sayward (Willsboro, N.Y.), Brittany Pierce (Madrid, N.Y.), Karley Cree (Hogansburg, N.Y.), Amanda Fleming (Pine City, N.Y.), and Bridget teRiele (Canton , N.Y.); freshman defenders Natalie Remington (Potsdam, N.Y.), Shanique Stewart (Bronx, N.Y.), Kortney Rincavage (Glen Aubrey, N.Y.), Rebecca Remington (Potsdam, N.Y.); sophomore defender Tressa Goolden (Canton, N.Y.) and freshman goalie Megan Evans (Potsdam, N.Y.).
