Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team used a dominating first half to earn their 10th win of the season in a 15-5 victory against visiting Morrisville State College on Wednesday. The 10 wins ties the previous program best set during the 2015 season.
The Roos jumped out to a quick 2-0 start four minutes in behind goals from MaryClare Bowes (Irondequoit, NY) and Hannah Christiansen (Lake View, NY). Morrisville got within one on a DeeAnna Rammelt free position shot but SUNY Canton answered with eight consecutive goals, three of which came off free-position attempts.
SUNY Canton held the Mustangs scoreless over the final 21:49 of the half to take a commanding 11-1 lead into intermission. Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) led the Roos with four first half goals, while Bowes added two goals and one assist. Tsieboo Herne (Hogansburg, NY), Sydney Kinder (New York, NY), Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, NY) and Katelynn Nutter (Carthage, NY) all added first half goals for the hosts.
The game evened out a bit in the second half as the Roos were able to clear their bench as every player on the team saw the field. Each team scored four second half goals as Carroll found the back of the net two more times to up her season total to 66, while Christiansen and Herne scored once apiece.
Carroll led the offense with six goals, while Herne, Christiansen and Bowes added two apiece. Amanda Woods (Williamsville, NY) totaled a game-high five ground balls to go with three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Carroll caused a game-best three turnovers and picked up six draw controls, while Mia Jermano (Massena, NY) chipped in with four ground balls. Kailey Mitchell (Fort Drum, NY) also collected three draw control wins.
Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY) stopped four shots to earn her 10th win of the season, while Cailin Dunphy made 13 saves for the Mustangs.
The women's lacrosse team is back in action on Friday when it visits Oswego State at 4 p.m.
