Houghton, NY – Theresa DiMartin scored a game-high five goals as the SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team earned a 16-9 road victory at Houghton College on Friday evening.
The Roos (1-4) jumped out to a 3-1 lead midway through the opening half behind goals from Katelynn Nutter, Lora Ardoin and DiMartin. Houghton (1-3) got within 3-2 after Jennifer Zacchigna's second goal of the game but DiMartin gave SUNY Canton a 4-2 halftime lead on her second goal of the game.
Canton extended its lead to 6-2 as Ardoin and Amanda Woods found the back of the net in the opening three minutes of the second half. The Highlanders tallied three unanswered goals to get within one, but it was all Roos from there as they caged five unanswered goals from Allison Auger, DiMartin, MaryClare Bowes and a pair from Molly Denny to open a 12-6 lead on their way to the 16-9 victory.
Becca Kieffer made 12 saves in the win for the Roos, while Alison Clark turned aside 11 shot for Houghton. Amanda Woods led all players with six ground balls, while Denny recorded a game-high five draw controls.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday when it visits Morrisville State at 1 p.m.
