Providence, RI – Noelle Niemiec scored the game-winner 3:41 into overtime to lift the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a 2-1 win at Johnson & Wales University on Friday.
The Roos improve to 11-10-1 overall and 5-4-0 in Colonial Hockey Conference play, while the Wildcats fall to 8-13-1 overall and 3-6-0 in conference play.
The hosts got on the board first at 6:24 of the opening period when Cassie Wakefield netted her fifth goal of the season. Canton responded at 18:01 of the middle period when Tessa Dobson scored a power play goal, her sixth tally of the season, off passes from Jessica Pele and Tess Adams.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period as they skated to overtime. After the Roos dominated the extra session early, it was Niemiec who provided the heroics with her seventh goal of the season off the setup from Pele.
Brooke Susac made 24 saves in her 11th win of the season, while Julia Aberg turned aside 28 shots in defeat. SUNY Canton was 1-for-2 on the power play, while killing off both of their penalties.
These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 5:35 p.m. in Lynch Arena.
