CANTON -- The SUNY Canton women’s volleyball team opened their 2012 season Friday with a convincing 3-1 home win over Green Mountain College.
The Roos won the first two sets 25-14 and 25-9 and then hit a brief bump in the road in the third set losing 25-21 before finishing off the Eagles 25-16 in the fourth and final set.
“I saw a lot of good things from a lot of different players today,” said second-year head coach Carol LaMarche.
“We had some good hits and ran some good plays. I also saw some areas we need to improve on so it’s not a bad match to start out with and hopefully tomorrow we’ll step it up a little more.”
Sophomore setter Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, N.Y.), who led the team in assists as a freshman, paced the Roos (1-0) with 21 assists and six aces. Last year’s leader in kills, sophomore outside hitter Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) pounded down seven kills on Friday to go with seven digs and three aces.
Senior outside hitter Danielle Swanston (Burke, N.Y.) added five kills and four digs. Junior outside hitter Shiloh Bourgeois (Keesville, N.Y.) contributed seven aces and freshman middle hitter Morgan Bills (Walworth, N.Y.) had four kills.
The Roos take on Castleton State College Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and then Wells College at 2:30 p.m.
