SUNY Canton Volleyball falls to Plattsburgh

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball dropped a tight three match battle 3-0 (24-26, 22-25, 20-25) against visiting Plattsburgh State on Tuesday evening in the Roos House.

In a back-and-forth opening set the teams were tied at 18 after a kill from Shea Norton (Batavia, NY). The teams remained tied at 21 and again at 24 apiece. The Cardinals (10-10) closed out the opening set on a kill from Hunter Grotjohn and service ace from Syndey Gabriel.

Plattsburgh jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second set after a kill from Sam Colombo and ace from Dani Borund. The Roos (11-10) battled back within 16-13 after back-to-back kills from Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) and Norton. Later in the frame SUNY Canton got within a single point after three consecutive kills, two from Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) and one from Norton. SUNY Canton remained within a single point before the Cardinals scored the final two points off putdowns from Lexi Pascal to seal the 25-22 victory.

SUNY Canton rattled off four straight points in the middle of the third set to turn a one point deficit into a three point lead. The run included a kill from Cornish and service ace from Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY). After a Cardinal timeout Plattsburgh responded with five consecutive points to regain the lead tying the set at 14 apiece. From there the visitors outscored the Roos 11-6 down the stretch to earn the sweep.

Riley led all players with 13 kills hitting .476 (13-3-21), while Cornish posted 11 kills and six digs. Melissa McMaster (Pittsford, NY) was effective in her return to the lineup posting eight kills without and error for a .533 hitting percentage (8-0-15). Norton added six kills, while Jenna Roat (Penfield, NY) was impressive defensively with 20 digs. Peyton Robinson dished out 34 assists to go with her seven digs and is now just three assists short of 2,000 in her career.

Pascal paced the Cardinals with 12 kills, while Colombo and Dani Borunda added seven apiece. Gabriel dished out 33 assists for Plattburgh.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday at the Susquehanna Tri-Match. The Roos play the hosts at 12 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match with Messiah University.
