Elmira, NY – Kaleigh Foran went a perfect 5-for-5 from the plate and reached base eight times as the SUNY Canton softball team earned a split with a 5-2 win in the nightcap after dropping the opener 8-5 at Eldridge Park on Monday.

With the split the Roos remain above .500 at 4-3 overall, while the Soaring Eagles move to 2-5.

Game 1

Elmira jumped out to a quick start with three runs in the bottom of the first of the opener as Emily Carlin helped her own cause with an RBI groundout and Carolyn Corcoran followed with a 2 RBI double to center field.

The Roos got one back in the top of the second as Alicia Evans grounded out to third but a throwing error allowed Brittany Miner to score all the way from second. The Soaring Eagles regained the three-run advantage in the bottom half of the frame on a Chelsea Storch RBI groundout.

SUNY Canton took a 5-4 advantage with one run in the third and three more in the fourth. Stefanie Miller ripped an RBI double down the right field line to score Foran in the third and Courtney Hyland produced a clutch 2 out 3 RBI double down the right field line to score Rachel Thornhill, Rhea Coad and Foran.

Elmira responded with four runs of their own in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the 8-5 victory.

Carlin earned the win on the hill tossing five and two-thirds innings surrendering two earned runs with three strike outs, while McDougal struck out three without allowing a hit for the save.

Jordan Podkladek took the loss for the Roos scattering 10 hits and eight earned runs over six innings.

Foran was perfect at the dish going 3-for-3 with two runs and drew a walk. Coad also finished with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4, while Hyland finished with 3 RBI and Miller drove in another run.

Game 2

After two scoreless innings in the nightcap, the Roos broke through in the third when Miller single through the right side to bring home Cassidy Yetter. Lizzie Bimonte reached on an error that scored Foran for the early 2-0 lead.

Elmira added one run each in the fourth and sixth innings as the teams played to extras. The tiebreaker rule in softball places the last batter of the previous inning on second base. With Coad on second, Foran singled through the right side and after stealing second there were runners at the corners. With one out Miller poked a base hit through the right side that scored both Coad and Foran. Valerie Clark followed with a pinch-hit RBI double.

The Soaring Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with one out but Storch lined into a double play right back to Kelsey White who closed out the win with an unassisted double play.

White earned her first collegiate win going the distance as she scattered eight hits, six walks and two earned runs over eight innings. Katie McDougal took the loss for Elmira giving up three earned runs with eight strike outs.

The softball team is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday for its home-opening doubleheader v. Lyndon State at 3 p.m.
