Queensbury, NY – The SUNY Canton softball team earned a 3-2 win v. SUNY Delhi in the nightcap after dropping a 7-2 decision to Maine-Presque Isle in the opener of the American Collegiate Athletic Association Championships on Saturday at the Adirondack Sports Complex.

With the split in the double elimination tournament the Roos improve to 20-14 tying the program record for wins in a season. The squad has tied the 1998 team that went 20-6 and the 2011 team that went 20-16. With one more victory the team will stand alone.

Game 1

The Roos opened the scoring in the third inning as Rhea Coad led off with her first home run of the season and Lizzie Bimonte plated Courtney Hyland on an RBI double to left center.

Maine-Presque Isle got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a Sara Packard solo shot to left field to get within one. The Roos committed three errors in the fifth inning leading to six unearned runs for the Owls as they opened a 7-2 advantage after five frames.

The Roos looked to rally over the final two innings but were unable to get a run across.

Jordan Podkladek tossed six innings giving up seven runs, but only one was earned, as she struck out seven batters. Packard earned the win giving up two earned in seven innings with two strike outs.

Game 2

Canton opened the scoring in the first on three straight singles culminating in a Stefanie Miller RBI single scoring Rachel Thornhill. The Broncos took a 2-1 lead in the second scoring one on a Canton error and the other on a Sara Yambor RBI single.

The Roos bounced back with a pair of runs in the third scoring off a pair of Delhi miscues to regain a one run lead. Due to more strong pitching from Podkladek the Roos held on to the 3-2 win.

Podkladek improved to 13-6 on the mound tossing 5.2 innings in relief striking out two batters without giving up a run.

Thornhill led the Roos going 2-for-3 scoring twice and stealing a base. Coad doubled while four other Roos recorded hits.

The softball team will play Maine-Presque Isle in the ACAA Tournament on Sunday at 10 a.m. Both teams have one loss and the loser will be eliminated from the double-elimination tournament. The winner will advance to face Finlandia and must beat them twice to win the tournament due to them still being unbeaten through the opening day of play.
