ROCHESTER -- The SUNY Canton men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 overtime setback to Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Freshman William Banahene (Rochester, N.Y.) made his second straight start in goal and made six saves in the first half before giving way to sophomore Antonio James (Black River, St. Elizabeth) who made four saves in the second half.
Banahene stifled the Tigers on two good scoring chances in the first 45 minutes. Early in the half RIT broke into the area on a crossing pass but Banahene was able to intercept the service. With less than 23 minutes left RIT again made a strong rush and Banahene made a nice diving stop off a one-on-one break to keep the game scoreless.
The game would hold that way for the rest of the first half and the entire second half, forcing the game to go into extra time. In the 92nd minute of play RIT’s CJ Brunner sent a cross that was headed into the goal by Matt Broedel for the game-winning score.
The Roos are next in action next Saturday, Sept. 8 for their home opener against Green Mountain College starting at 2 p.m.
