WESTON, Mass. -- Freshman Chris Gamble (Carthage, N.Y.) tossed in four goals and junior Corey Spuck (Rochester, N.Y.) made 19 saves in goal as the SUNY Canton men’s lacrosse team held off Regis College 9-7 for their first win of the season Saturday in Weston, Mass.

Sophomore Jason Thompson (Massena, N.Y.) added two goals. Seniors Patrick Connelly (Chittenango, N.Y.) and Rob Gleason (Vestal, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Steve Novak (Seymour, Conn.) also scored, and sophomore Tyler Caswell (Potsdam, N.Y.) added two assists.

The Pride got on the scoreboard first 2 ½ minutes into the opening quarter, but then Gamble slipped through the defense for an open shot to tie the game at 1-1. Gleason then fed Thompson in front of the net for a man-up goal to give the Roos a 2-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes.

The Roos struck two more times off goals from Connelly and Novak in the second quarter to build a 4-1 lead with just under six minute remaining in the opening half. Regis scored with 2:36 on the clock and the Roos had a 4-2 lead at halftime.

Gamble took advantage of another man-up opportunity for the Roos as he took a feed from Caswell and rifled a shot in the back of the net to stretch the visiting team’s lead back to a three-goal margin.

Regis got another to pull within5-3, but the Roos countered just 32 seconds later when Gamble fed Thompson with a quick pass that the sophomore ripped home making the score 6-3 after three periods.

The Pride scored two quick goals to start the final stanza and close the gap to 6-5. SUNY Canton answered with three straight goals, two from Gamble and one from Gleason, to push their lead to 9-5 with under five minutes left in the game.

Regis kept battling and tallied two man-up goals late in the game to draw within two scores, but Spuck made a huge save after Regis won the faceoff following their second goal and the Roos were able to run out the clock and beat the Pride for the second year in a row.

Billy Stewart scored two goals with two assists, and Morgan Ford made 11 saves for Regis.

SUNY Canton completes their New England swing playing at Mitchell College on Sunday at 1 p.m. at New London High School in New London, Conn.
