SUNY Canton hockey to host 4th Annual Terry Martin / Alumni Classic

(Canton, N.Y.)- SUNY Canton will host the 4th Annual Terry Martin / Alumni Classic hockey tournament Nov. 18-19 in the college’s new ice arena.

The tournament is named in honor of long-time hockey coach Terry Martin who served in that position at SUNY Canton for 25 years winning an unprecedented 14 junior college national championships. Martin compiled a 527-211-29 overall record during his illustrious career and he also captured 24 NJCAA Region 3 championships along with several regional and national Coach of the Year awards. In 2009, Martin was the recipient of the prestigious John “Snooks” Kelley Founders Award by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The award goes to those individual who have contributed to the overall growth and development of the sport of ice hockey in the United States.

In the opening round on Friday, Nov. 18 Oswego State University will take on the University of Scranton at 5 p.m. and SUNY Canton will battle John Carroll University at 8 p.m. The consolation game will be on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 12:30 p.m. and the championship game at 3 p.m.

Immediately after the championship game on Saturday, there will be an alumni game at 5 p.m. followed by an alumni and team gathering in the Halford Alumni Suite in the ice arena. The SUNY Canton club team will play St. John Fisher at 7 p.m. and all alumni are invited to another gathering at the Hoot Owl in Canton starting at 9 p.m. that night. Alumni that are interested in participating in the weekend are asked to RSVP to the Alumni Office at 1-800-811-6727 or alumni@canton.edu by November 11.

SUNY Canton won the inaugural Terry Martin Tournament in 2008. John Carroll University won the title in 2009 and Oswego State won the tournament last year
