SUNY Canton baseball winless in doubleheader vs. St. John Fisher

Rochester, NY – Junior Francesco Palumbo had a big day finishing with five hits but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped a doubleheader to No. 24 nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College by scores of 19-7 and 11-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1

Host St. John Fisher jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and added 11 more runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Roos rallied late to plate seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Travis Schindler doubled to left to score Palumbo and Wilson Matos followed with a two-run homer in the sixth. Schindler singled home Edward Malinoski, Jr. in the seventh and Matos laced a 2 RBI double down the left field line before scoring on a Joseph Campbell sacrifice fly.

Palumbo was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a double and scored a pair of runs, while Matos drove in four runs on two hits and Schindler plated a pair on two hits. Scott Eisenmenger and Ryan Fahy led the Fisher bats with 4 RBI each, while Ryan Simmons and Allen Murphy both drove in a pair of runs.

Tom Brusca took the loss in the opener scattering five hits and seven runs over one and two-thirds innings. Jim Dawson earned the win for Fisher surrendering five earned runs over six innings.

Game 2

The Cardinals got out to a quick start once again in the nightcap with five runs over the first four innings. The Roos got within 5-3 in the top of the fifth when Christian Nazario-Cruz scored on a single by Trevor Keleher and Schindler and Matos followed with RBI base hits.

Fisher added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the 7-3 advantage and added four insurance runs in the eighth.

Keleher and Palumbo led the Roos with two hits each, while five different players finished with a pair of hits for the Cardinals led by 3 RBI from Antony Mantova and a 2 RBI game from Murphy.

Dominick Pisciotto earned the win tossing six innings giving up seven hits and one earned run. Dan Coant took the loss surrendering four earned runs on five hits over three innings.

The baseball team returns to the diamond on Tuesday when it visits Hamilton College at 3:30 p.m.
