Junior wing Joe Sullivan came out of the right corner, cut in front of the net and backhanded a shot inside the near post 20 seconds into overtime to give St. Lawrence University a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Cornell and a sweep of its ECAC Hockey weekend at Appleton Arena in Canton Saturday night.

Sullivan scored his ninth of the year as the Saints won the draw to start the extra period and the puck went back into the SLUGreg Lewis continued his solid play in the Clarkson crease with 21 saves in the one goal win over Colgate - photo by Mike Tansey defensive zone. Defenseman Gavin Bayreuther brought it to the neutral zone and sent it ahead to Tommy Thompson, who in turn chipped it to Sullivan near the top of the faceoff circle in the Cornell end. Sullivan skated along the boards and curled out of the corner to beat Big Red goalie Mitch Gillam for the winner. It was Sullivan's fifth goal in his last six games and his ninth of the year.

The Saints, who swept a weekend series for the first time since the opening weekend of the season, improve to 13-11-2 overall and 7-6-1 in ECAC play. Cornell, which lost both of its North Country games in overtime, is now 11-7-3 overall and 6-6-2 in league play.

"Joe Sullivan scores a lot of big goals for us. He leads the team in points and that kind of snuck up on me," said Saint coach Greg Carvel. "He makes big plays and scores big goals and I am very happy for him.

"In a season you need a game like tonight to really catapult you. Last year we beat Yale in overtime and I think that sent us on our way…hopefully this game will do the same. We haven't won a lot of games lately, but we've played well. Tonight I asked them to give me their best period of the year in the third and they did…we were outstanding," Carvel added.

The Big Red scored the only goal of the first two periods just 15 seconds into the first power play chance of the game. Junior wing Jake Weider scored the goal as he was all alone in front and put away his third of the season at 11:08 of the first.

Neither team could dent the others goaltending in a nearly dead-even second period as Saint goalie Kyle Hayton kept his club in it with 10 of his 25 saves in the middle period and Gillam had 18 through two periods.

The Saints came out hard in the third period and outshot Cornell 14-2 through the first half of the period. They finally got one past Gillam, who had 18 of his 36 saves in the final 20 minutes, when Bayreuther worked himself open at the center point and sent a waist-high shot over Gillam's glove to tie it from Matt Purmal and Jacob Pritchard at 12:07.

Cornell had a late power play and a chance to regain the lead, but the Saints killed off all four Big Red power plays after the first one and came away with the victory.

"You could just tell by the energy on the bench that we were going to find a way tonight, and I thought we played our best period of the year," Carvel added. "We have to continue to play like that…I am very proud of our guys…that is a huge win for us."
