Junior Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) scored both goals for the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team as the Golden Knights returned to ECAC Hockey play with a 2-1 victory over Brown University in Providence, RI on Friday night.

Clarkson, which improved its record to 16-5 overall and to 8-1 in ECAC Hockey, plays Yale in New Haven, CT on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Styner broke a 1-1 tie late in the contest with her second goal of the night to complete a career-best goal-scoring effort. Styner converted a pass from freshman defenseman Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) for the game-winner at 17:29 of the third for her sixth goal of the season. Junior Jamie Lee Rattay (Kanata, ONT) also assisted.

The two teams traded a pair of goals in a 19-second span early in the first period for a 1-1 tie after the opening 20 minutes. Styner connected first at 7:48 with juniors Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) and freshman defenseman Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) assisting.

Brown (3-10-1, 2-7) came right back with a goal by Jessica Hoyle at 8:07 to tie the game.

After a scoreless second frame, Styner finally broke the deadlock late in the third as Clarkson won its first game of 2013.

The Knights outshot the Bears 29-22, Junior Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 21 saves for the Green and Gold. Aubree Moore made 27 stops for Brown.

Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play, while Brown went scoreless in its only opportunity with the extra skater.

Both Mercer (94 points) and Rattray (95) are closing in on the century mark in scoring. Rattray and Ambrose were playing their first NCAA game of the New Year after helping to lead Canada’s U-22 team to a Gold Medal last week at the Meco Cup in Germany.
