Strong second period leads Roos past Golden Bears, 7-2

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team scored four straight goals in the second period as six different players found the back of the net en route to a 7-2 victory against visiting Western New England on Friday evening. The win is the third straight for the Roos (4-10-1), while the seven goals are the most scored under Head Coach Trevor Gilligan.

After a scoreless first period for both teams Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) got the scoring started on the power play at 5:28 of the second. He beat Western New England goaltender Scott Brown top shelf over the blocker off passes from Brandon McMartin (Toronto, ON) and Eric Witzel (Cumberland, ON).

George Curry (Schaumburg made it 2-0 SUNY Canton at the 14:22 mark as he fired a shot inside the right post. Taylor Pickering (Marine City, MI) and Sam McLaughlin (Ottawa, ON) picked up helpers on the play. Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QUE) extended the lead to three at 16:53 on a wrap-around goal that he snuck through the five-hole of Brown.

Witzel netted his team-leading seventh of the season at the 18:27 mark, the Roos fourth unanswered goal and third in just over a four minute span. Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) and Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, IN) were credited with assists on the play. Western New England (1-10-2) got on the board with 10 seconds left in the middle period as Jack Murphy scored off a rebound. Tyler Pionk and Joe Zeidler earned assists on the tally as SUNY Canton led 4-1 after two.

McLaughlin beat the opposing goaltender for the first time this season 5:18 into the third period off the set-up from Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, NY). The Golden Bears got one back on a Matt Dore tally at 11:04. Western New England was whistled for a game disqualification penalty at 12:16 of the final frame resulting in a five minute power play for SUNY Canton.

The Roos made the Golden Bears pay scoring twice with the extended skater advantage. Schneider potted his fourth of the season off passes from Costello and McMartin at 13:01 AND 36 seconds later Kulczycki scored his second of the night. Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) and Pickering earned helpers on the final goal of the evening.

Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) made 21 saves in his first win of the season. Brown stopped 26 shots before Tim Carr made two saves in relief. The Roos went 3-for-6 on the power play, while the penalty kill unit successfully killed all three Golden Bear power plays.

The men's hockey team will have a quick turnaround as they play host to Stonehill College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Roos House.
