Schenectady, NY - Senior Ashley Loggins scored 14 first-quarter points en route to her second career 30-point game but her effort wasn't enough as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped the Liberty League opener to Union College 63-57 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while the Dutchwomen improved to 6-2 and 1-0. Clarkson will face Rensselaer on Sunday afternoon before returning home for a five-game homestand.

Everything started off well for the Golden Knights as the team cruised to a 17-point lead at the half. In the first quarter, Loggins had 14 of Clarkson's 18 points while Union struggled somewhat offensively. Clarkson scored 14 of its 18 points in the final five minutes of the quarter and the Dutchwomen had seven points in that same stretch, but in the final two minutes Union was unable to convert. That inefficiency continued at the start of the second quarter as Union was scoreless over the first 3:31 while Clarkson gained a double-digit advantage. That lead swelled to as many as 19 points before finally settling at 17 at the break. Clarkson shot 14-for-32 in the first half, while Union struggled with 13 turnovers and just seven field goals in 29 attempts.

While everything went right for Clarkson and went wrong for Union in the first half, the reverse was true in the second half. Clarkson maintained a 14-point lead until the midway point of the third quarter (40-26) and held a 43-31 lead with 4:24 remaining, but the Knights went 0-for-5 with three turnovers down the stretch and saw the lead fall to three points going into the fourth.

Though Clarkson scored at the 9:24 mark to regain its three-point lead, Union's defense buckled down and went on an 11-0 run in the next five minutes. Clarkson committed six turnovers and had just three shot attempts during the run, which was finally broken by a 3-pointer from Loggins. Colleen Daley added a lay in a moment later to get back within three but that was as close as the Knights could get, finishing the game behind by six.

Loggins shot 11-for-23, with 12 of those attempts coming in her big first quarter, to finish with 30 points. Sophomore guard Devin Sorell added in nine points, all on 3-pointers. Loggins, Alyssia Marsal and Madison Shea also contributed four steals each on defense.

Abby Katz led the Dutchwomen with 14 points in a balanced effort for Union. Natalie Leone also contributed nine points and seven rebounds while Sophie Borg also scored nine.
