Strong second half leads Roos' women’s lax past Monarchs, 19-11

Wilkes-Barre, PA – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team outscored host King's College 11-5 after halftime en route to a 19-11 victory on Saturday.

The Roos jumped out to a quick start as Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) scored the first three goals of the contest and Katelynn Nutter (Carthage, NY) made it 4-0 after 6:14 of play. Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, NY) assisted Carroll's first goal as well as Nutter's, while MaryClare Bowes (Irondequoit, NY) earned a helper on the second Carroll tally.

King's responded with four straight goals, two each from the sticks of Amanda Carroll and Anastasia Araviakis to tie the game at four.

Hutcheson and Carroll exchanged goals as the game remained tied at five. After a SUNY Canton own goal, the Roos bounced back with the final three scores of the half, including two in the final 59 seconds to take an 8-6 advantage into intermission.

Hutcheson scored her second of the game with 4:14 remaining and Tsieboo Herne (Akwesasne, NY) and Carroll netted goals 16 seconds apart in the final minute. Carroll paced the Roos with four goals in the opening half, while Hutcheson added two goals and two assists.

Shots were even at 15 apiece over the opening 30 minutes, while the Roos held a slight edge in ground balls (16-14) and draw controls (8-7).

King's scored the first two goals out of halftime to get within one but Canton scored seven of the next eight goals to open up a commanding 16-9 lead on its way to the eight goal victory.

Carroll led all players with nine goals on just 13 shots and added a game-high five draw controls. Hutcheson was equally effective setting up the offense and scoring totaling eight points on four goals and four assists, while Bowes finished with three goals and one assist. Amanda Woods () picked up a game-high five ground balls.

Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY) stopped 15 shots for the Roos including nine after halftime. Victoria Zawacki made seven saves for the Monarchs.

The women's lacrosse team has a quick turnaround as it will visit Wilkes University on Sunday at 12 p.m
