(Canton, N.Y.)- Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) led three players in double figures with 22 points as the SUNY Canton women’s basketball team lost to Alfred University 80-65 Friday night in Canton.

The Roos put out a spirited effort against a talented Alfred team that has lost just once this season. Despite trailing at halftime the Roos had an outstanding first 20 minutes on both ends of the floor led by Myers who dropped in 18 of her total points in the opening frame. On several occasions the Saxons threatened to open a large lead but the Roos kept battling and late in the first half erased a nine point deficit with a 15-8 run that slashed the lead down to just two points with 2:36 left in the half. Myers had seven points during that stretch and Elissa St. Germain (Ogdensburg, N.Y.) contributed four. The lead would stand at 38-34 heading into the locker room.

In the second half Alfred slowly started to pull away but again the Roos wouldn’t go quietly as they continued to play hard and knocked a double-digit lead down to four points following a 3-pointer from Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) with 14:18 left in regulation. Alfred counted with a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to stretch the lead back into double figures which they would maintain for the remainder of the contest.

The Roos had a great night at the free throw line as they shot 85 percent converting 18 of 21 attempts including 8 of 9 in the first half.

Myers shot 9-for-13 from the field, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and sank both free throw attempts. She also had eight rebounds and four assists. Corrine Riegel (Bainbridge, N.Y.) added a season-high 13 points and five rebounds for the Roos (2-7). Sedlacek had a terrific all-around game with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists and St. Germain finished with nine points and seven rebounds and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

Grace Williamson dropped in 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Alfred. Sarah Federico added 17 points and six boards.

The Roos wrap up the first semester this Sunday when they play at Albany College of Pharmacy.
