Strong opening half leads Roos men’s lacrosse to third straight win

Buffalo, NY – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team outscored host Medaille College 15-1 in the first half on its way to its third straight win in a 24-8 victory on Saturday.

Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) led the offense with six goals and six assists, while Jack Elberty (Canton, NY) posted four goals and five assists in his first game of the season. Skye Sunday (Akwesasne, NY), Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) and Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY) recorded three goals apiece in a balanced offensive effort.

Luke DeGaetano (Canandaigua, NY) scored twice and Jeffrey Perez (Bronx, NY), Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) and Trevor Hughes (Dexter, NY) netted one goal each for SUNY Canton (3-3).

The Roos opened up a 7-1 lead after the opening quarter behind four goals from the stick of Smith. SUNY Canton tacked on eight second quarter scores, three from Yule and two each from Smith and Elberty, while the defense held the Mavericks scoreless. The Roos took a commanding 15-1 lead into intermission.

Seven different players scored for SUNY Canton after halftime on its way to the convincing 16 goal victory. The Roos held the upper hand in shots on goal (35-19), ground balls (55-37) and face offs (24-11), while going 7-for-11 in extra man opportunities.

Kody Kocsis (Brasher Falls, NY) stopped six shots in his second win of the season playing the first and second quarters. Andrew Fiske (Winthrop, NY) replaced him making five saves over the final two quarters. Seth Gregg turned aside 11 shots for Medaille.

Gruneisen led all players with 10 ground balls, while Gamble and Perez combined for 16 pickups. Perez was also a force in the X recording 21 faceoff wins in 31 attempts. Sunday and Jamie Stevens (Hudson, NY) caused two turnovers apiece.
