Strong first half shooting carries Roos past Vermont Tech

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team shot 54 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range in the first half on its way to a 76-61 victory against visiting Vermont Technical College on Wednesday.

The Roos jumped out to a 45-18 halftime lead and never looked back. SUNY Canton forced the Knights into 17 first half turnovers leading to 16 Roo points. The hosts outscored Vermont Tech in the first half in points in the paint (44-16), fast break points (18-2) and bench points (30-2).

SUNY Canton led by as many as 29 with 7:44 remaining but a late charge from Vermont Tech trimmed the deficit, although the Roos were in charge throughout.

Briana Sayer (Hermon, NY) led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Tatiana Laroche (Elmont, NY) added 16 points, six boards and four assists. Taylor Saltus (Clintonville, NY) finished with 14 points.

Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, NY) added eight points, nine rebounds and four assists. Kim McCarthy (Ludlow, MA) chipped in eight points off the bench, while Logan Tallman (Heuvelton, NY) recorded six points and four assists. Caseylynn Fulton (Saint Cloud, MN) registered six points and six rebounds.

Kaitlin Lyford led all players with 22 points for the Knights, while Katie Thygesen added 13. Paige Wells nearly missed out on a double-double with nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

SUNY Canton honored its lone senior Destiny Petty (Flushing, NY) prior to the contest on Senior Night.

The women's basketball team will host cross-town St. Lawrence University on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Roos House.
