Strong first half leads Roos women’s lax past Wildcats, 18-10

Marcy, NY – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team used a strong first half to cruise to its third consecutive win to open the season earning an 18-10 victory against host SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday.

Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) continued her impressive start to the season posting six goals and two assists, while Tressa Goolden (Canton, NY) found the back of the net four times and added an assist.

Hannah Christiansen (Lake View, NY) caged three goals in her first game of the season, while Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) scored once and dished out two assists. Megan Poupore (Massena, NY) had two goals and Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, NY) and Caitlin LaVoie (Fulton, NY) added a goal and assist each.

The Roos (3-0) controlled play against SUNY Poly (2-1) in the first half scoring the games first six goals over the first 13:51 of play. Goolden and Carroll scored twice in the game-opening run, while Chritiansen and Ardoin also added goals.

Poly eventually got on the board with 13:19 remaining but SUNY Canton scored five of the next seven goals to take a commanding 11-3 lead into intermission.

With the Roos in control the game was much more even in the second stanza as each team found the back of the net seven times en route to the 18-10 SUNY Canton victory. Amanda Woods led all players with five ground balls, while Keri Dempsey (Wappingers Falls, NY) added four pick-ups and a game-high three caused turnovers. Goolden led the Roos with four draw controls.

Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, NY) turned aside eight shots in net for SUNY Canton, while Cassidy Thompson and Casey McBride combined to make eight saves for the Wildcats.

The women's lacrosse team has a quick turn around as they will host Wilkes University at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
